You can add links to buttons, signs, graphics, text and just about anything you put on your Web Studio pages.
There are two major classes of links in WebStudio: Site Links, MyLinks.
Site links are links to the other pages, and anchors, on your site.
MyLinks are links you add that are to other websites, to email, downloadable files, etc.
There are two places to go to add links: Link Gallery and the Properties dialog for any object.
Using the Links Gallery
Click on the Link Gallery's tab to display the Link Gallery. The first list in the Gallery is the "Site Links" list. This list has all the names of the pages in your site. To add a link to a graphic or button, simply drag the name of the page from the Site Links list onto the button or graphic and drop it. That's it! Adding Links to Text
There are a few different ways to add links to text, depending on how much of the text you want to be linked.
- To make an entire text object have the link, drag the link directly onto the text object;
- To make an individual word have the link, double click on the text object to enable it for editing. Then drag the link directly onto the word you want the link to be on;
- To make multiple words have the link, select the text as you would to change its font or style. Then drag the link directly onto the selected text;
- To add a text link directly to your page, just drag the link onto the page's background. A new text link will be created where you drop it.
Using MyLinks
You can add links to external sites by Right Clicking on the MyLinks list in the Links Gallery. Then choose AddLink from the resulting menu. You can drag and drop links from any of the lists in the Links Gallery as described above.
Adding Links in the Properties Dialog
Right Click on any object to view the Object's Properties dialog. If there is a Link tab in the Properties dialog then you can add a link to the object. Click on the Link Tab and type the complete link. That's it!
Adding Email Links
To add an email link, you create one with MyLinks or to the Properties dialog, as described above.
The secret to an email link is prefixing the email address with mailto:. If, for example, your email address is support@webstudio.com the email link would be: mailto:support@webstudio.com.
When to use MyLinks vs. the Properties Dialog
Add your links to MyLinks when you are going to use them on multiple pages, or on multiple objects, or on Text. It is very simple to enter the link once and then drag and drop it onto the objects you want it on.
Add your links directly to the object's Properties dialog when you are only going to use the link once in your website.
Anchors The Anchor feature in WebStudio enables you to add a link to your page that will take the visitor to a specific location on that page or a specific location on another page.
An example would be if you have an index to articles on your page and want visitors to click on a word in the index and be taken directly to the location of the topic clicked on in the index. We use this on our monthly WebStudio Newsletter for example.
This is a two step process. First, you define where the location you want to be taken to is, that's the anchor. Then you add the anchor's link to the button or text you want to take them there.
Let's say you have a graphic at the bottom of your page that you want as your anchor. Go to the Links Gallery, go to the Site Links list. At the top of the Site Links list is the Add an anchor to object item.
Drag that item onto the graphic you want to be your anchor. The Add Anchor dialog will come up. Enter the Title for the anchor. This is simply the text that is displayed in the Site Links section of the Links gallery. Then enter a description for the anchor if you wish. Then click OK.
Now the anchor's title is listed in the Site Links list.
Finally drag and drop the anchor you just made from the Site Links list onto the object that will take your viewer to the anchor graphic. So, if you have a button, simply drag and drop it onto the button. When you preview your page, press the button and it will scroll the page so the object with the anchor is in view.
Note that if you want to add an anchor to a text object, just drop it on the un-selected text object. You cannot add an anchor to a word or selection of text, just the entire text object. You can, however, add the Link to the anchor to a word or selection of text, just like any other link.
