Welcome to Web Studio 5.0
This is the second in a series of emails designed to help you get the most out of your evaluation of Web Studio. Today you will learn about galleries, objects, and text.
Galleries
The galleries contain tools and graphics to help you build web pages. There are Backgrounds, Buttons, Templates, Photos and other graphics you can use to design your pages. There are also Text, Links, Templates and pre-made Forms galleries. Some of the galleries have a lot of content and are sorted into sub galleries. If you see a little open folder icon in a gallery, click on it to see what is in that sub folder. Click on the close folder icon to close the sub gallery.
Drag and Drop
When you want to use something from a gallery, click on the item and hold down the mouse as you "drag" the item from the gallery. After you drag the item onto the page, release the mouse and "drop" the item onto the page. You will also use drag and drop to move objects around the page and link your pages together.
You can add your own graphics to the galleries too. Read about Galleries and all you can do with them in Chapter 5: Galleries . |
Objects
Everything on your page is some type of object. Even links need to be connected to an object on your page. You will use objects more than anything else during web design.
Select objects
You need to select objects before you can do things like resize, space and align them. If you want to select one object, click on it and you will see the selection handles. If you want to select more than one object, then hold down the Shift key while you click on the objects.
Page Layout Tab
Click on the Page Layout tab to see many of the commands that you can use for objects. One of the groups is the Bring To group. Since every object is on its own layer, these commands help you move each object through layers.
Text
Text is placed on the page in a text object. There are several ways to add a text object. Here are two:
1. Click the tab to open the Text Gallery. Drag and drop a font onto the page. This creates a text object where you can enter text.
2. Click on the Text tab > Insert group > New Text Object. This creates a text object where you can enter text.
Text in a text object can be added and edited much the same as your word processor. To edit text in the object, double click on the text object to activate it for editing. This is different than selecting. If you want to align the text objects themselves, you select them just like any other object. But if you want to edit the text in the object, you need to activate it for editing. |
The fonts in the Text Gallery are the ones that you have on your computer. When people view your website, they can only see the fonts that they have on their computers. If they don't have a font that was used on your website, their browser will pick another font. This may or may not be a problem. Some fonts, such as Arial and Times New Roman are always safe to use. If you want to use an unsafe font, you can turn it into a graphic. Read more about safe and unsafe fonts in Chapter 10: Text . |
